A 23-year-old man has been sentenced to six months in jail for stealing an estimated $21,000 while serving as director of a youth soccer program.
Superior Court Judge Lawrence Kapiloff sentenced Joe Don McDowell Jr. to a year in jail but suspended six months of the term on the condition that McDowell undergo therapy for compulsive gambling. McDowell had pleaded guilty to embezzling the money to gamble at the Del Mar Race Track.
Kapiloff also ordered McDowell to make restitution to the soccer program.
