An 18-year-old Irvine man who said he had been roughed up by Newport Beach police a year ago Monday won a $22,500 settlement in Los Angeles federal court.
Robert Harrison filed a civil rights suit against the Newport Beach Police Department in October, 1986, shortly after he was arrested on a charge of being drunk in public. In his lawsuit, Harrison alleged that police officers placed him in a choke hold that bloodied his eyes for several weeks.
Because Harrison was a juvenile at the time, he was not charged after his arrest, according to his attorney, Stephen Yagman.
