Overall, 64% of Americans think the recent U.S. military retaliation against Iran will trigger further Iranian attacks, while 21% think it will deter such attacks, according to a recent Gallup Poll. At the same time, public support for the American military presence in the Persian Gulf is at its highest level (56%) since the Reagan Administration disclosed its policy last May. About half the public (53%) believe U.S. destruction of an Iranian offshore installation was an appropriate response to Iran’s missile attack on an American-flagged Kuwaiti tanker, while 30% think it was too lenient and only 7% consider it too harsh.
