College Roundup : UC Irvine Defeats Stanford in 1st Game but Then Loses to No. 1 Cal in Water Polo
UC Irvine’s Tony Bell scored three goals and Greg Wilson added two in an 8-3 victory over Stanford in the morning game of the Pacific Coast Athletic Assn.-Pacific 10 water polo tournament at Belmont Plaza Pool in Long Beach Saturday.
The Anteaters, fifth-ranked, lost to top-ranked Cal in the evening match, 5-4, in overtime. Wilson had two goals in that game.
In Pacific Coast Athletic Assn. women’s volleyball:
Pacific 3, UC Irvine 0--UC Irvine was no match for second-ranked University of the Pacific as the Tigers won, 15-7, 16-14, 15-12, at Irvine.
Irvine (9-10 overall, 4-8 in PCAA play) was led by Kris Roberts, who had 13 kills. Ali Wood added 10 kills for Irvine.
In Golden State Athletic Conference volleyball:
Southern California College 3, Christ College Irvine 1--The Vanguards won, 15-7, 11-15, 15-8, 15-12, as Laura Dequine had 13 kills, 4 blocks and 17 digs. Sally Voss added 10 kills and 5 blocks for SCC. The Vanguards are 10-21 and 4-10.
In nonconference volleyball action:
Chapman 3, Minnesota Duluth 1--Tami Light had 11 kills and Caryn McKinney had 6 aces for the Panthers, who won, 12-15, 15-11, 15-7, 15-9, in the Nebraska tournament. Chapman lost to Alaska Anchorage, 15-13, 15-10, 15-4, in a second tournament game played Saturday.
In Golden State Athletic Conference men’s soccer:
Southern California College 2, Point Loma Nazarene 0--Chris Zachariou scored two second-half goals to lead the Vanguards at Costa Mesa. SCC is 8-9-2, 5-1-1.
