A powerful eruption rocked a volcanic mountain near the Soviet city of Severo Kurilsk, about 1,200 miles northeast of the Pacific port of Vladivostok, the official Tass news agency said. The 3,705-foot volcano, Ebeko, has been erupting for five days, and ash from the eruption has mixed with snow to send a gray blizzard into the nearby town, Tass reported. It said that inhabitants of the city had not been evacuated but that doctors are monitoring the air and drinking water and experts from the Soviet Academy of Sciences are keeping a close eye on the volcano.
