SATURDAY LETTERS : TV News Reading

Surely, television news deserves better than to have its anchors referred to as “news readers with pretty faces†(Saturday Letters, Oct. 24).

These people have paid their dues as field reporters, one of the most demanding and pressure-packed assignments one could face. Having worked the smaller radio and television markets for more than 30 years, I learned firsthand that the competition is fierce, and those that rise to the top have every reason to be proud.

As for merely “reading†the news, try it sometime. In the solitude of your front room, without a million and one distractions, try reading two paragraphs of the newspaper without stumbling all over yourself.

Our Los Angeles anchors are among the elite, the best in the business, and my hat’s off to them. How I wish I had been talented enough to have joined them.
