Fiji’s military government decided to seek recognition from the Soviet Union, China and other Asian countries as part of a major foreign policy shift. A document outlining the new policy said that Fiji should overcome its reliance on Australia and New Zealand by seeking aid and trade elsewhere. The document expressed fears that Australian and New Zealand trade unions might impose further sanctions because of a military coup in the South Pacific island state. Fiji’s army commander, Col. Sitiveni Rabuka, has installed himself as head of state and declared Fiji a republic.
