Up to 16 inches of snow closed schools and downed power lines around the upper Great Lakes today, and temperatures fell to record lows as far south as Kansas and Missouri.

The communities of Ironwood and Bessemer on Michigan’s Upper Peninsula reported 16 inches of snow, closing schools there and at Hurley. The low of 9 degrees at Aberdeen, S.D., toppled a record that had been on the books since 1896. Kansas City, Mo., hit a record 24 degrees, and Concordia, Kan., dipped to 23. Freezing temperatures were reported as far south as Bartlesville, Okla., and Fort Smith, Ark.
