Aztecs Shut Out USD in Soccer

SAN DIEGO — Brian Finnerty, playing in his second game of the season, stopped five shots Wednesday night to lead San Diego State to a 2-0 victory over the University of San Diego in a nonconference soccer match at the Aztec Bowl.
Finnerty was playing in place of regular goalkeeper Felipe Hernandez, who sustained a broken leg in practice Tuesday and will miss the rest of the season.
Eric Winalda scored a goal in the 24th minute to give SDSU a 1-0 lead, and he assisted on Kyle Whittemore’s goal in the 76th minute. The rest was up to Finnerty, whose only previous start was three weeks ago against Point Loma Nazarene College.
SDSU improved to 9-3. USD fell to 7-4-1.
In another nonconference soccer match:
Cal State San Bernardino 2, UC San Diego 1--UCSD’s Dain Deforest scored to snap a scoreless tie three minutes into the second overtime, but San Bernardino, the nation’s 17th-ranked NCAA Division III team, rallied to win at home. After Deforest’s goal, which came 103 minutes into the game, San Bernardino had goals from Chuck Campbell and Hector Uribe one minute apart. Uribe’s goal came with 1:15 remaining in the second overtime.
