Signal Hill Receives Pedestrian Safety Award for 4th Year Without a Fatality

SIGNAL HILL — This city’s 1986 pedestrian safety accomplishments were recognized Tuesday when Mayor Richard Ceccia accepted a Pedestrian Safety Citation from the Automobile Club of Southern California. The annual award was earned in the American Automobile Assn.’s annual Pedestrian Protection Program, coordinated locally by the auto club.
The citation was won in competition involving 798 United States cities of less than 10,000 population, according to Sally Brake, supervisor of the auto club’s local district office. Signal Hill had no pedestrian fatalities in 1986--for the fourth consecutive year--whereas communities of similar size averaged 2.0 fatalities per 100,000 population. This marks the second time in six years that Signal Hill has received AAA recognition.
