Pomona : Raises Approved for City Workers

The City Council has approved new contracts for most city employees after months of negotiations with four different employee bargaining groups. The only major employee group not covered by the new contracts is police officers, who reached agreement on a one-year pact in August.

The city reached three-year agreements with both the City Employees Assn., which represents general service workers, and the bargaining unit for the city’s management and confidential employees. The contracts include a 3% wage increase retroactive to July 1, followed by a 5% raise in 1988 and a 7% hike in 1989.

However, the last two increases could be reduced by 0.5% if the annual inflation rate, as measured by the consumer price index, is below 4% in 1988 and below 6% in 1989. If inflation in 1989 is below 5%, the raise for that year would be decreased by 1%.

Fire Department employees and police management personnel agreed to one-year contracts that call for a 3.1% pay increase retroactive to Sept. 15. It was the same raise given to police officers last month.
