Veteran slugger Jim Rice and rookie catcher John Marzano of the Boston Red Sox underwent surgery at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center in Worcester to repair injured knees.
Rice, who sat out the last 26 games of the season, had arthroscopic surgery on his right knee. No other details were given.
Marzano, who caught Roger Clemens’ two-hit, 4-0 shutout against the Milwaukee Brewers in the 1987 season windup Sunday, had a bone fragment removed from in front of his right knee.
Meanwhile, third baseman Tim Wallach of the Montreal Expos underwent successful surgery to remove a bone chip in his left foot. The operation was performed in Montreal by Expos physician Dr. Larry Coughlin.
Wallach, 30, is to return to his home in California today and will be in a cast for two to three weeks.
He will be allowed to begin running in six weeks, and is expected to be fully recovered in time for spring training.
Wallach appeared in 153 games for Montreal this season, hitting .298 with 26 homers and a club-record 123 runs batted in.
