Your article on the Panama Canal by Richard Boudreaux (Part I, Sept. 7) tends to convey the impression that transit operations have been adversely affected by the present political unrest in the Republic of Panama.

Boudreaux was assured by the Panama Canal Commission Administrator D. P. McAuliffe that canal operations have remained normal throughout the past three months of political activity in Panama. During the month of July, the period referred to in this story, traffic moved through the canal in a safe and efficient manner with the time a ship spent in canal waters a remarkably low 17 hours. McAuliffe gives credit to the commission work force, both Panamanian and U.S., for this outstanding performance during a difficult period.
