East met West this week as Richard Gere bowed prayerfully before the 14th Dalai Lama of Tibet at a reception to announce plans to create a Tibetan cultural center in New York. Calling him “my old friend,†the Dalai Lama returned the gesture to Gere, who is a disciple of the Dalai Lama and chairman of the board of the planned Tibet House--intended to focus attention on the cultural and religious heritage of Tibet.
