Whittier : Arts Center Moves Ahead
Whittier College officials have set Oct. 22 for ground breaking on the college’s $8-million performing arts center. At one time, the project had been scheduled for completion by December, but fund-raising and planning complications delayed it.
The college has not raised the money to pay for the center, but Communications Director Donald Stewart said enough has been collected to start construction. The J. Paul Getty Trust of Los Angeles just announced a $500,000 grant to the college to pay for the center’s art exhibition room.
The Spanish-style building, to be built at Painter Avenue and Philadelphia Street, will have two main halls, a 500-seat theater and a combination rehearsal hall and smaller theater.
