On Aug. 31, just before 7 p.m., a newsperson appeared on Channel 11, explaining a bit about a story to be detailed later that evening on the news. The woman was referring to a story in which a “young man’s arms and legs were cut off.” My 3-year-old had just turned on (the set) and heard. She was very upset, and I found myself terribly angry at having to explain the details of such a tragedy to a child so young. At such an early hour, when children will very possibly be near the television, why can’t more explicit wording be used? I would hope this will not happen again and that no other young children were exposed to such news.
