S. Africa Mail Strike Ends With 20% Hike in Minimum Wage

JOHANNESBURG, South Africa — A two-month strike by thousands of black postal workers ended today after the government agreed to boost minimum wages and consider rehiring fired workers.
The strike had closed post offices in many black townships and slowed deliveries in white areas.
Over the last two weeks, the Post Office fired about 1,900 of the 14,000 workers it said were on strike.
Under the settlement, strikers will not be paid for the time they missed work, but management agreed to increase the minimum wage for postal workers by 20% starting Oct. 1.
