A Simi Valley man was sentenced to 10 years and eight months in prison for manslaughter and drunk driving in the deaths of a man and his young daughter in a head-on collision. Sammy Menchaca, 27, also was accused of second-degree murder, but a Ventura County Superior Court jury deadlocked on that charge. Judge Robert Soares also fined Menchaca $10,000. Killed in the Aug. 23, 1986, collision were Patrick Mestayer of Ventura and his 3-year-old daughter, Sarah. Mestayer’s wife, Sally, 28, and their 16-month-old daughter were injured. Menchaca’s car crossed a median at about 70 m.p.h. and slammed into the family’s truck.
