Long Beach : City Seeks Supermarket

In an attempt to bring a supermarket to a central city neighborhood, the Redevelopment Agency board has agreed to pay $45,000 for a 90-day option to buy a former Safeway supermarket building just south of Poly High School on Atlantic Avenue.
The city is negotiating with ABC Markets, a seven-store chain based in Los Angeles, to operate the market, said agency director Roger Anderman.
The 22,000-square-foot building has been used in recent years by the Social Security Administration, which is moving out.
Bringing a supermarket back to the central city was a key campaign issue last year in a special 6th District City Council election won by Clarence Smith.
There is no supermarket within a one-mile radius of the 1320 Atlantic Ave. site, Anderman said.
