As expected, Augie Garrido, who led Cal State Fullerton to two collegiate baseball championships in 15 years, was named baseball coach at the University of Illinois. From 1974 through 1984, Garrido’s Titans either won or shared the Pacific Coast Athletic Asnn. championship.
Illinois Athletic Director Neale Stoner, who previously was athletic director at Fullerton, also hired Garrido at that school in 1973. Garrido was 667-292-6 at Fullerton. His team won the PCAA title last season before losing in the regional tournament.
Garrido said an important part of his decision was Illinois’ commitment to installing artificial turf on its new $1.6-million playing field.
