F. W. Woolworth’s income rose 19% to $37 million for the second quarter. The New York-based retailing chain credited the combined effects of a reduction in the company’s effective tax rate and the strengthening of foreign currencies against the dollar. Sales rose 9.3% to $1.63 billion.
