Chlordane Maker to Halt Sales

WASHINGTON — In a surprise move, the manufacturer of chlordane has signed an agreement to stop selling the controversial termite-killing chemical that also could cause liver and nerve damage in humans and cancer in rats, the EPA said today.
The agreement between Velsicol Chemical Corp. of Rosemont, Ill., and the Environmental Protection Agency surprised many who had been expecting the suspension or cancellation of the pesticide.
