The World : S. Korean Strikes Spread

Hundreds of striking miners blocked two key rail lines in South Korea, newspapers reported, and tens of thousands of workers elsewhere in industry stayed off their jobs as strikes spread across the country. South Korea’s largest auto maker, Hyundai, and some other companies resumed operations, but 113 firms still were crippled by labor disputes. New labor problems were reported at 39 companies, including a sit-in at Daewoo Motor Co., the second-ranking automobile manufacturer, by 2,000 workers demanding large pay raises.
