The World : Haiti Paralyzed by Strike

Businesses and transportation throughout Port-au-Prince, the capital of Haiti, were shut down by a general strike called to protest the army’s killing of at least eight people and to demand that the military-dominated government resign. The victims were killed Wednesday when soldiers opened fire on about 2,500 people as they marched peacefully in the downtown area to condemn the Tontons Macoutes, members of the dreaded secret police who disbanded after dictator Jean-Claude Duvalier fled into exile 17 months ago. Opposition groups are seeking to topple the three-man governing council led by Lt. Gen. Henri Namphy that has governed Haiti since Duvalier fled.
