Felke Takes Back Javelin Record

East German athlete Petra Felke set a world record of 258 feet 10 inches in the women’s javelin throw Wednesday at the East German sports festival in Leipzig.
Felke’s throw bettered the previous record of 254-1 set by Britain’s Fatima Whitbread in the European meet at Stuttgart, West Germany, Aug. 28, 1986.
Felke had held the record since June 1985, until Whitbread’s performance.
