India, Australia, Sweden Each Take a 2-0 Lead in Davis Cup
Ramesh Krishnan and Vijay Amritraj each scored straight-set victories Friday to give India a 2-0 lead over Israel in their Davis Cup World Group quarterfinal, which is being held under tight security.
The matches were played in heat that reached 107 degrees at the heavily guarded New Delhi Lawn Tennis Stadium. Before play started, police used batons outside the stadium to disperse about 200 supporters of Palestinian rights, who demanded play be canceled.
Krishnan defeated Shlomo Glickstein, 7-5, 6-1, 6-2, and Amritraj beat Amos Mansdorf, 6-4, 6-4, 7-5.
In other World Group quarterfinals, Australia moved in front of Mexico, 2-0, and Sweden took a 2-0 lead over France.
The winner of the Sweden-France series will go up against the winner of the United States-West Germany series, and the India-Israel winner will meet the Australia-Mexico winner in the semifinals Oct. 2-4. The semifinal winners will play for the Davis Cup Dec. 18-20.
At Frejus, France, Mats Wilander and Kent Carlsson scored convincing victories on clay courts to lead Sweden. Wilander overpowered Henri Leconte, 6-3, 6-4, 6-2, while Carlsson downed Thierry Tulasne, 6-1, 3-6, 6-1, 6-2. France was without its top player, Yannick Noah, who withdrew from the team claiming he was tired after losing in the first round of a tournament last week in Bordeaux, France.
At Brisbane, Australia, Wimbledon champion Pat Cash defeated Mexican Leonardo Lavalle, 6-2, 6-1, 6-0, and Wally Masur beat Jorge Lozano, 6-3, 6-4, 6-4.
