A federal judge, stepping into a dispute that has raged since the end of World War II, says the Defense Department erred in refusing to extend veteran’s status to the men who sailed merchant ships during the war. U.S. District Judge Louis Oberdorfer stopped short of ordering the Pentagon to award veteran’s status to all surviving merchant seamen. He invited attorneys for both sides to submit additional written arguments addressing his authority to take that step.
