COLOMBO, Sri Lanka — A Sri Lankan has been sentenced to death by a Colombo court for smuggling the biggest quantity of heroin ever brought into the country.
High Court Judge T. Sunderalingam imposed the sentence on Thenuwara Upasena on Friday after the defendant was found guilty of smuggling 24 pounds of heroin in May, 1984.
A police spokesman said that Upasena was the first Sri Lankan to be condemned to death under tough anti-drugs laws passed three years ago.
