Church and gay leaders are seeking support for an agreement that would allow critics to peacefully protest Pope John Paul II’s visit to San Francisco in September but not interrupt it with violence. After meetings last month, representatives of the two sides issued a statement saying that opponents have the right to demonstrate peacefully but Catholics are also entitled to hear the Pope’s message. Activists for homosexuals’ and women’s rights have expressed opposition to the Pope’s visit because of the church’s stand on homosexuality and abortion.
