Know the Score: Sports Aren’t the Only Way Out

In your “Sports vs. Gangs” series (June 23-25), you discussed the problem society is faced with--drug-related activity among gangs. However, you have only offered one alternative to a better life--sports.
Children must be taken out of the streets. They must be placed in a program where they can develop skills and talents they never possibly dreamed of having. They must be encouraged to study, to be part of a work force, to have hope and faith in themselves.
And most important, they must not be misled by the media and athletic committees who offer only one alternative to a better life--sports.
