World University Games : Soviet Women Get Sweep in All-Around Gymnastics

Elena Chouchounova of the Soviet Union had three perfect scores of 10 Friday to win the gold medal and lead a Soviet sweep of the first four places in the women’s all-around gymnastics competition at the World University Games.

Yuri Korolev of the Soviet Union won the men’s all-around title Thursday, also leading his colleagues to the team gold.

Chouchounova had perfect scores in the uneven bars, beam and floor exercises, and added a 9.9 in the vault, to finish with 39.900 points. She was followed by teammates Vera Kolesnikova, who took the silver medal with 39.450, and bronze medalist Anjelika Chtchennikova with 39.100.

In team competition, the Soviet women were first with 118.550 points; Romania was second with 116.850, and China was third with 115.650.

In swimming, Mitzi Kremer of the United States won the women’s 100-meter freestyle in 57.30 seconds. She beat Conny van Bentum and Mildred Muis, both of the Netherlands.

The United States also won its second swimming relay gold medal in the 4x100-meter medley. The U.S. team of David Berkoff, Todd Torres, Jay Mortenson and Eric Hansen was timed in 3:45.72. Japan was second in 3:46.27, and West Germany finished third in 3:48.73.

Aneta Parascoiu of Romania won the women’s 100-meter backstroke in 1:02.92. She was almost a second ahead of Susan O’Brien of the United States (1:03.77). Jolanda de Rover of the Netherlands was third in 1:03.92.

Patrascoiu also won the silver medal in the 200 butterfly, finishing nearly two seconds behind winner Elisabeth Roussaki of Greece.

Andrei Patrakov of the Soviet Union won the men’s 400 freestyle in 3:56.13, and Neil Cochran of Britain won the men’s 200 individual medley.
