Isn’t Competing What It’s Really All About?

With all the talk recently about the Lakers signing Navy center David Robinson in two years, after his service obligation is over, I can’t help but wonder about the future of the NBA.

One of the marvelous things that make sports so attractive is the possibility of the unbelievable to happen. The games are played because the underdog has a chance, the meek can someday rise and rule the league.

But, if the best teams are constantly allowed to get the best young players through loopholes, ignorance or money, then the league is doomed to be nothing more than an 82-game exhibition schedule that finances the weak teams before the Lakers claim the crown.

How long will the people of Utah or Dallas or any other lesser franchise watch the same old summer rerun?I can’t help but root for the San Antonio Spurs to sign Robinson and maybe someday become competitive again. Isn’t the game about competing?
