The Controversy Over Pit Bulls
I’m not going to get into the pit bull controversy. A ravening beast is a ravening beast and should be put to death without hesitation.
My concern is with the obviously ill-equipped and undertrained officer who was sent to the scene by the Department of Animal Regulations. It was clear that this unfortunate woman was tragically unprepared for the task. At least two experienced animal control officers should have been sent there.
This dog was a known attackers of human beings. They should have been equipped with protective gear including chemical deterrents. The guidelines of how to handle such incidents should be drastically revised. I’m not advocating that officers should be allowed to go out and start blowing dogs away, but a modicum of common sense would dictate that a person of little experience wearing only a cloth jacket and pants, no gloves, and carrying only a stick with a noose will not suffice.
Regardless of what comes of the ongoing argument regarding attack dogs and in particular pit bull terriers, the city functionaries responsible for that work should not endanger their own employees through that kind of ignorance and inattention to the most fundamental perimeters of safety.
