We would like to respond to the recent Calendar article regarding the possible use of non-union workers in the event of a Director’s Guild of America strike (“To Work or Not During a Strike . . . ,” by Michael Cieply and Diane Haithman, June 20).
Cieply and Haithman report that producers have approached university film and television students, noting further that “Two sources close to the guild’s negotiating committee said they had received reports that UCLA students were being trained on the set of ‘Days of Our Lives’ . . .”
As UCLA students in the Department of Theater, Film and Television, we would like to express our support of the DGA in its negotiations. We find it regrettable that university students have been approached in this manner and we would like to state our opposition to the use of students as scab labor.
