Several members of the Simi Valley and Royal highs’ girls soccer teams are in Brisbane, Australia, this week competing in an international junior soccer tournament. After the team’s six-day stay in Australia, it plans to play a match in Fiji.
Coached by Jim Murawski and Mark Johnson of Simi Valley, members of the team include Stacy Basil, Kelly and Kerry Bertoldo, Brenda Brian, Suzanne Bryan, Marlo Cordova, Holly Giese, Kelly Kauffman, Sharon Lee, Jeanne Marchese, Anita Miller, Donielle O’Brien, Kris Rogers, Angela Washburn and Christy Worsley from Simi Valley.
Representing Royal are Joanne Boucher and Darlene Dattel. Simi Valley graduates Kelli Murawski and Leslie Page also will play.
The team raised money for the trip by staging fund-raisers and by securing sponsorships.
For the second consecutive year, the Ventura-Santa Barbara Sharks girls basketball team placed second in the Northern California Summer Shootout at Pleasant Valley High in Chico.
The Sharks, a club team, lost in the final to North Coast, 83-61. Karrie Parsons of Burbank High was named to the all-tournament team. Others currently on the team are Kristi Gellenbeck and Katie Krause of Newbury Park and Lina Mascarenas of Thousand Oaks.
In the Class of the Field tournament in Oregon City, Ore., last week, the Sharks took first place, raising their record to 9-4.
The team will conduct its Blue-Star Western Shootout on July 17-19 at Pepperdine University in Malibu.
Camarillo High senior Jim Hand was named the best defensive back in the senior division of the Offense-Defense Football Camp in Riverside.
Five local players were included on a team that competed in the 48-team U.S. Volleyball Assn. tournament in Albuquerque, N.M., this week.
The Southern California volleyball club team is coached by Ron Beick of Thousand Oaks High, and includes Beth Welch, Julie Chellevold and Kristin McIntyre of Thousand Oaks, Dana Simone of Westlake, Jolene Clemens of Agoura, Tina Koehler of Louisville and Lura Braden of Royal.
Bill McLean of Canoga Park won the 15-lap hobby class figure-eight event and placed second in the 25-lap oval race Friday night at Saugus Speedway. McLean edged Dave Blankenship of Reseda in the figure-eight. The two have combined for nine wins in 10 races this year.
Saturday night’s lineup includes NASCAR modified, sportsman, mini-stocks and stock car figure-eight events. A figure-eight “train race,” where three cars are hooked together, also is scheduled.
In overall point standings, Dave Phipps of Simi Valley leads the sportsman class with 233, and John Cran of Reseda leads the street stocks with 1,685.
