Contel will purchase Equatorial Communications.

Atlanta-based Contel plans to pay shareholders of Equatorial, based in Mountain View, Calif., $4 in cash for each outstanding share of common stock. Equatorial provides private satellite data networks for data broadcasting and terminal-to-computer network applications. Contel ASC, part of Contel’s Information Systems sector, provides communication services through a digital network of satellite and fiber optic facilities.
