Gardena : Tax Information Available
Union Federal Savings & Loan Assn. is providing free information packets on a new tax law that requires children 5 and older to have Social Security numbers for parents to claim them as dependents on federal tax returns filed next year.
The packet, available at Union Federal’s Gardena branch, 1275 W. Redondo Beach Blvd., includes an application for a Social Security card and instructions on how to fill it out. A brochure also explains that the primary purpose of the new regulation is to reduce tax evasion through duplicate claiming of dependents.
The Social Security numbers for children also will be used for reporting interest, dividends or other payments to the Internal Revenue Service.
