Street Gangs: Passed and sent to the Assembly on a 34-0 vote a bill (SB 1555) by Sen. Alan Robbins (D-Van Nuys) to crack down on crimes committed by street gangs by making it illegal to participate in a gang with knowledge that its members intend to engage in criminal activity or to willfully promote such conduct.

Textbooks: Passed and returned to the Assembly for concurrence in amendments on a 27-3 vote a resolution (ACR 11) by Assemblyman Bill Leonard (R-Redlands) stating that school textbooks should not arbitrarily exclude balanced references to religion if “essential for an understanding of the history and culture of our society and the relationship between church and state under our Constitution.â€

Latinos: Passed and sent to the Assembly on a 37-0 vote a resolution (SCR 43) by Sen. Robert Presley (D-Riverside) requesting the University of California to form a task force to coordinate efforts to try to solve problems facing Latinos, such as school dropout rates, unemployment, poverty and participation in politics and government.
