SAN YSIDRO, Calif. — The driver of a truck filled with about 100 illegal aliens died today after being wounded by a Border Patrol agent when the driver ignored orders to stop the vehicle, authorities said.
FBI spokesman Jim Bolenbach said the shooting occurred Monday night on Old Highway 94 near Campo. Authorities said they tried to stop the vehicle to question its occupants.
Bolenbach said the driver tried to run down the agent, who then fired through the windshield, striking the driver in the head.
The driver, whose name was not immediately available, died at 6:45 a.m. today at San Diego’s Sharp Memorial Hospital, hospital spokeswoman Gloria Bentsen said.
