Seaver Will Reportedly Abandon Comeback Attempt

Tom Seaver, three-time Cy Young Award winner, has ended his comeback bid with the New York Mets and will retire, the Associated Press reported.

The Mets plan to hold a news conference today. Seaver was not at Shea Stadium Sunday for the Mets’ 8-3 win over Philadelphia.

Seaver, who had said he would retire if he felt he could not pitch effectively in the major leagues, has done poorly since agreeing to terms with his former team in May.

Seaver, 42, has not pitched in the majors since last August, when a knee injury ended his year with the Boston Red Sox. The Red Sox did not re-sign him after the season, making him a free agent.

Seaver, with a career record of 311-205, originally hoped to make his first start for the Mets on Saturday. But he made virtually no progress in one exhibition start, two simulated games and other workouts with the Mets.
