LISBON — Angolan rebels said Saturday they killed 48 government soldiers and captured an army command post after an hour of heavy fighting in Angola’s central Malange province.
The National Union for the Total Independence of Angola said in a statement distributed in Lisbon that it attacked the post in the town of Quirima on Thursday, forcing goverment troops to flee. The statement said two rebels were killed in the fighting.
UNITA, supported by South Africa and the United States, has been fighting since 1975 to topple Angola’s Soviet- and Cuban-backed government.
