Argyris Kabouris scored two free throws with four seconds left in overtime as Greece edged the Soviet Union, 103-101, at Piraeus, Greece, to win the European basketball championship for the first time.

Greece’s victory denied the Soviets a record 14th European title.

Nick Gallis, a 6-foot 1-inch guard who played at Seton Hall, led Greece with 40 points. Valdis Valters led the Soviets with 23.
