Developer Gets to Buy City Park for Bettering Another

Montclair city officials have allowed a Newport Beach developer to improve one city park in exchange for letting him purchase another as site for construction of a $20-million shopping center.
The developer, the Wattson Co. of Newport Beach, made more than $1.5 million in improvements, including four new baseball diamonds, in time for the season, to Saratoga Park at Central Avenue and Kingsley Street.
In return, the company bought the 6.4-acre John F. Kennedy Park on the northeast corner of Moreno Street and Monte Vista Avenue for development of the 16-acre shopping center, which is due to open early next year with a Price Savers wholesale warehouse scheduled for completion in August.
