Tamil separatists hurled a grenade at a police patrol in the Sri Lankan city of Batticaloa, killing three civilians and severely injuring an officer, police said. Meanwhile, India’s diplomatic mission in Sri Lanka asked the government for greater protection for its staff and nationals because of reports they might be attacked after India dropped relief supplies to embattled Tamils in northern Sri Lanka last week. A newspaper in New Delhi reported that India had considered direct military intervention on the side of the Tamils but opted for the relief mission instead.
