Pleasures at Yosemite
Now that the long-kept secret of the joys of Wawona is out (Trip of the Week, Michele and Tom Grimm, May 17), and since our family has enjoyed this area of Yosemite for many years, we feel we might as well point out some of the attractions which the Grimms did not mention.
There are beautiful spots on the South Fork of the Merced River where you can swim and sun in summer and early fall. There is Lower Chilnualna Falls, fabulous in the spring, with delightful pools and rock formations above, just an easy few minutes’ walk from your car. There is Big Creek across the highway from the hotel behind the golf course, a great place to picnic or just be. Also, Wawona is only 17 miles from Badger Pass, the oldest ski area in California, now with new lifts, usually open Thanksgiving through Easter, depending on the snow.
Besides the Wawona Hotel and Campground there are additional lodgings which were not mentioned. The Redwoods, (209) 375-6256, has 72 privately owned housekeeping cottages off the highway in the woods, many near the river, available year round. Nearby Camp Chilnualna, (209) 375-6295, also has a variety of cabins.
