State Gains 2.3%; Palmdale Sets Pace
California gained 604,800 residents in the last year--a 2.3% increase--to boost its population to 27,292,300, the state Department of Finance estimates.
Palmdale in Los Angeles County was the state’s fastest-growing city with a 40% gain, from 23,555 to 33,083. Coronado in San Diego County was second with a nearly 27% increase, from 19,457 to 24,704, the department said in a report.
Los Angeles County was the most populous in California, with 8,403,535 residents, and San Diego was second, with 2,240,658.
The third-fastest-growing city in the state was Rocklin in Placer County, with a 25% increase, from 9,776 to 12,244.
The Siskiyou County community of Dorris ranked last, at 441st, in population growth by losing 44 residents, a 4.6% drop to 893--the largest percentage decline in the state.
The department also estimated declines in population for Alpine, Glenn, Inyo, Modoc and Siskiyou counties.
The Department of Finance uses population figures to calculate the distribution of state motor vehicle fees, cigarette and gas taxes, and other revenues to cities and counties.
