Emmiyan Is Second to Go Over 29 Feet
From Times Wire Services
Robert Emmiyan of the Soviet Union became the second long jumper in history to leap 29 feet, soaring 29-1 Friday, the Tass news agency reported in Moscow.
Emmiyan’s jump was only 1 1/2 inches short of the world record of 29-2 1/2, set in the 1968 Olympic Games by Bob Beamon of the United States.
Until Friday, the second-longest jump in the event had been 28-10, by American Carl Lewis, who reached that distance twice.
Emmiyan made the leap on his first attempt in a track and field meet at Tsakhkadzor, Armenia, Tass said in a dispatch from the southern Soviet republic.
