Anaheim : Man Jailed as Suspect in Robbery, Rape Attempt
A 19-year-old Riverside man was arrested on suspicion of armed robbery, attempted rape and auto theft Thursday after a police officer attempted to stop him for a traffic violation, police said.
About 11:20 p.m. an Anaheim patrol officer saw a car speeding near Lincoln Avenue and Beach Boulevard, police said. When the officer tried to stop the vehicle, the driver accelerated.
Police discovered that the car had been reported stolen in Los Angeles County, and a police helicopter joined the chase. The suspect abandoned the car at Crescent Avenue and Magnolia Street, Police Sgt. Chet Barry said.
Darren Scott Hulbert was arrested in an apartment complex in the 2600 block of West Baylor Circle, where he was hiding in the bushes, Barry said. Hulbert was armed with a .32-caliber automatic pistol.
Police believe that Hulbert stole the car during an armed robbery and attempted rape in the Diamond Bar area, Barry said.
Hulbert was booked on suspicion of armed robbery, attempted rape and auto theft, police said. Bail was set at $50,000.
