Argentina’s House of Deputies approved a presidential proposal to end prosecution of hundreds of military officers accused of torturing and killing suspected government opponents in the late 1970s. The lower house approved the measure 119 to 59 after 14 hours of heated debate. The proposal is vehemently opposed by human rights activists and those who lost loved ones during the former military regime’s “dirty war†against suspected subversives, in which thousands of people disappeared. The plan now faces debate by the Senate this week.
