Blasts in Peru Kill 2 Rebels After Blackout

LIMA, Peru — Two guerrillas were blown to bits as 14 bomb blasts rocked Lima, shortly after a blackout plunged the city into darkness, police said Sunday.
Officers said the two rebels were killed Saturday night when dynamite they were carrying exploded prematurely outside a bank they apparently planned to bomb.
The blasts apparently was linked to the seventh anniversary May 18 of the insurgency by the Sendero Luminoso (Shining Path) movement, police said. The bombings began soon after a two-hour blackout plunged Lima and three other cities into darkness.
Guerrilla attacks have occurred daily in Lima and Huancayo since last Monday, when the rebels blacked out much of Peru by bombing the national electrical system, government ministries, banks and a police station.
